ANSWER

The Safety Program

The primary program for preventing injury and illness in the workplace is the Safety on Site (SOS) program which all departments are responsible for implementing.

SOS:

    • Effectively integrates safety into the workplace
    • Decreases frequency and severity of employee injuries
    • Reduces Workers' Compensation costs

Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Resources

EH&S provides safety consultations to UCI departments in an effort to promote and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Available resources provided by EH&S includes:

    • Safety on Site program (SOS)
    • Required safety training
    • Responding to reported safety concerns
    • Injury investigations for serious injuries
    • Hazardous Waste management
    • Ergonomic evaluations
    • Fire Prevention awareness
    • Lab and Building inspections

SUPERVISOR REQUIRED ACTIONS

Supervisors are responsible for creating and maintaining a safety culture. There are three main supervisory actions that foster safety:

  1. Being aware of EH&S resources
  2. Understanding your responsibilities associated with implementing the SOS program
  3. Knowing how to report safety concerns and injuries

Other activities that contribute to a safety culture and that supervisors are responsible for include:

  • Ensuring that new hires complete:
    • Safety Fundamentals or Lab Safety Fundamentals within one month of hire
    • EH&S required online training within three months of hire (including an ergonomic assessment) - available through the UCLC
  • Take SOS training online course for SOS Representatives (SR)
  • Select an SOS Representative (SR)
  • Establish safe work practices
  • Maintain a Safety Checklist (available in the SOS binder)
    • Identify hazards
    • Correct hazards

NOTE: Be aware that supervisor can be held legally responsible for the safety of their employees and should promote and maintain a safety culture by ensuring employees and properly informed and trained.

Definitions

UCI's Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) department promotes and supports a safe and healthy workplace while ensuring compliance with UC and UC Irvine policies and regulatory statutes and codes.

The California Code of Regulations Title 8, Section 3203, Injury, Illness, and Prevention Program (IIPP) states that every employer shall establish, implement, and maintain an effective Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP).

The Safety on Site (SOS) Program was developed to implement UC Irvine's IIPP as required by Cal/OSHA. The SOS program effectively integrates safety into the workplace and is a responsibility assigned to all UC Irvine employees.
