Role of Supervisor

The Organizational Services Unit of UC Irvine is committed to fostering a learning culture that inspires and empowers people success critical to facilitating staff development, growth, engagement, and excellence.  Offerings include training workshops, resource referrals, and guidance that empower career and professional development through programs that focus on helping staff with job skills and knowledge, professional networking, and exploration of future career growth options. 

A supervisor’s main role in supporting and engaging staff to develop is to:

  • Role Model: Consistently taking time for self-development, applying what has been learned, and sharing knowledge and resources with staff
  • Coach: Become a skillful coach who builds staff capability and accountability by engaging staff in the coaching process, providing timely and effective feedback, guidance, and support
  • Empower: Empower staff to take responsibility for professional and career development, assessing their own accomplishments and areas of needing improvement, and for their progress in achieving organizational results
  • Recognize: Recognize and acknowledge staff for taking responsibility for their own development, building mastery and competence, achieving organizational goals, and demonstrated commitment to their work and the organization
