Supervisor's Guide: Whistleblower and Fraud Guide

Role of Supervisor

Supervisors are expected to know, understand, and provide staff with guidance as provided by the Whistleblower and Fraud policies for reporting all allegations of suspected improper governmental activities.

One of the main roles of a supervisor is to protect the integrity of The University and this is enacted by being proactive and diligent when it comes to:

  • Knowing the policies and procedures that govern activities with potential for violations of the law
  • Being watchful for signs of fraud and illegal practices
  • Providing guidance and direction to staff and others regarding practices that could knowingly or unknowingly lead to allegations of improper actions
  • Knowing where to direct staff for resources when reporting irregularities and suspected violations
  •  Communicating and sharing the impact and severity of risks associated with improper activities and practices
  • Understand the rights of employees that protect them from retaliation as stated in OSHA’s whistleblower statutes whereas an employer cannot retaliate by taking "adverse action" against workers who report injuries, safety concerns, or other protected activity.
