ANSWER

Process for addressing conflict in the workplace that does not involve either employee discipline, grievances under a labor contract or policy complaints under PPSM 70:

  • State your concern from your perspective with the other person
  • Focus on the person’s behavior and specific events, not on personalities or motives
  • Listen carefully to what the other person is saying instead of getting ready to react.
  • Identify points of agreement and disagreement and give the other person time to process the information
  • Discuss the issues with other trusted sources such as direct supervisor, Human Resources, Ombudsman Office, Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, or Conflict Resolution Services
  • Develop a plan by prioritizing the issues of conflict, searching out options, and focusing on the future
  • Get closure by looking for shared interest and/or solutions.  Summarize the issues and solutions and acknowledge the other person’s efforts.

Definitions

Mediation is a confidential and voluntary process providing parties an informal opportunity to resolve or learn how to effectively manage disputes.

The Office of the Ombudsman provides a safe and comfortable environment to discuss complaints, concerns or problems confidentially. When appropriate, the office will initiate an informal intervention with the goal of facilitating a resolution that is acceptable to all parties involved.

The ombudsman acts as an independent, impartial resource. If a matter cannot be resolved through our office, a referral will be made. When appropriate, the office can make recommendations regarding policy review and change.
