ANSWER
Process for addressing conflict in the workplace that does not involve either employee discipline, grievances under a labor contract or policy complaints under PPSM 70:
- State your concern from your perspective with the other person
- Focus on the person’s behavior and specific events, not on personalities or motives
- Listen carefully to what the other person is saying instead of getting ready to react.
- Identify points of agreement and disagreement and give the other person time to process the information
- Discuss the issues with other trusted sources such as direct supervisor, Human Resources, Ombudsman Office, Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, or Conflict Resolution Services
- Develop a plan by prioritizing the issues of conflict, searching out options, and focusing on the future
- Get closure by looking for shared interest and/or solutions. Summarize the issues and solutions and acknowledge the other person’s efforts.
